Generate Serial Numbers
The serial number generator is available when you are recording the addition of new inventory items (through an invoice, item assembly, or bill of materials), and when you turn on serialization for an item that you already have in stock.
There are two ways to automatically generate serial numbers for a serialized item:
In the item record
This option is only available if you have turned on serialization for inventory that is already on-hand
- Open the inventory item's Serial Number tab. How?
- In the Home window, click Inventory & Services on the navigation pane.
- In the Tasks pane, right-click the Inventory & Services icon and select Modify Inventory & Services from the menu.
- Select an inventory or service item from the list and click OK.
- Click the Serial Numbers tab.
- Click View or Edit Serial Numbers.
- In the Serial number window, click Create Number.
- In the Create Serial Numbers window, enter the Starting serial number from which the generator should begin.
- (Optional) Enter the number of consecutive serial numbers to be generated. If you are generating numbers in the inventory record, the number of units in stock that do not have serial numbers is inserted by default.
If you are in a transaction window, the number to be generated equals the number of serialized units in the transaction that do not have serial numbers assigned to them.
Note: A maximum of 999 serial numbers can be generated at a time.
- Click OK.
In a transaction window
- After you have entered a quantity for the serialized item, click to open the Enter serial numbers window.
- In the Create Numbers area, enter the Starting serial number from which the generator should begin.
- (Optional) Enter the number of consecutive serial numbers to be generated. By default the number to be generated equals the number serialized units in the transaction that do not have serialinumbers assigned to them.
Note: A maximum of 999 serial numbers can be generated at a time.
- Click Create.
